Body Dysmorphia is an issue with how one perceives one’s body. This can start off as small criticisms of the body, but can grow into thinking that can become overwhelming to obsessional about one’s body and one’s appearance. A person can focus on one part of their body, or can find excessive flaws in their entire body. One can feel like these thoughts take over and greatly interfere with the ability to enjoy life.
The origins of body dysmorphia often begins with shame experiences in childhood. These experience can begin in the family of origin, or socially outside of the home. The pressures and expectations of society can reinforce the shame of the self that manifests in the shame of the body. It can be all encompassing for someone who struggles with body dysmorphia, taking over their thinking, their feelings and their time. It can lead to a relationship with elective medical procedures that can feel out of control. Body dysmorphia can also isolate people from other relationships, making people withdraw from friends and partners, or the pursuit of a romantic partner. People with body dysmorphia can feel a huge amount of shame about their relationship with their body, and it can be hard to put it into works even in therapy. We will work together to try to understand how you got here, and how you can heal.
